Simon Georg (George) Friedrich Riebow

Rudolph Rebo's father, Simon Georg (George) Friedrich Riebow, was born on January 9, 1836 in Alsace, Lorraine region of what was at that time France.  According to documentation on Ancestry.com, the Alsace, Lorraine region "has moved back and forth between French and German rule over the centuries."  Click here to read the timeline.  If this timeline is correct, Alsace and Lorraine were both part of France in 1836, at the time of Simon's birth.  Alsace and parts of Lorraine were annexed into Germany in 1871.  However, documentation such as the 1900 US Census, and George's Death Certificate list his place of birth, and both of his parent's place of birth, as Germany.

A relative posted the following on Ancestry.com,

"From Riebow Family Bible" Posted by shans751

...Great-Grandfather George wanted his son born in France so Christina [his wife] went to Alsace-Lorraine Province of France to give birth to George (1836)."

George was the son of George F. Riebow and (Christina?? or Louise Winter??), both of whom were born in Germany.

George married Ernestine Hart in 1860.  According to the 1900 US Census they had 9 children, with 8 living at that time.

Also according to the 1900 US Census, taken on the 5th day of June, 1900:

George, 64 years old, and Ernestine, 60 years old, had their daughter, Lena, 22 years old, living with them.  They were living in Mecosta Township, Mecosta County, Michigan where George was a farmer.

Ernestine born Sept 1839 in Germany, with both parents listed as born in Germany as well.

Daughter Lena was born Dec 1878 in Germany, with both parents listed as born in Germany.

All three immigrated in 1882, when Lena was 4 years old, and had been in the US for 18 years.

George and Ernestine had been married for 40 years, had 9 children with 8 currently living.

According to family record and family trees on Ancestry.com, 7 of those children are:

Bertha L Riebow  (August 16, 1862- July 02, 1942,  Bertha was born in Germany).  For some reason Bertha's mother's name is listed as "Christine" on her death index.  Perhaps Christine was a nick-name? Family record show Bertha was married twice, first to John [Alfred] Carlson, born in Sweden, then to Henry Ensch, born in Michigan.  Documentation indicates Bertha and Henry married on August 24, 1895, or August 23, 1895. The 1900 US Census, taken on June 18, 1900, finds Henry Ensch, 32 years old, living in Plymouth Township, Wisconsin, with his uncle, James Gaffeney, 50 years old, (September, 1849 - ??) and James' sister, Mary Ensch (January, 1844 - ??), 56 years old. Both James and Mary were born in Connecticut to parents who were born in Ireland. James and Henry was listed as single for some reason (perhaps Bertha and Henry were seperated?), Mary was widowed. Henry was working as a farm laborer.  On July 30, 1900 Bertha and Henry's daughter, Thelina was born in Big Rapids, Michigan.  According to the 1910 US Census, Bertha, 49 years old, and husband Henry J Ensch (1868 - May 11, 1927, born in Michigan), 47 years old,  were living in Big Rapids, Mecosta County, Michigan with their two daughters, Thelma E., 9 years old, and Helen G., 1 year old. Bertha's son from her previous marriage, Carl J. Carlson, 16 was living there, along with her now married daughter Anna L. Carlson Mcnamara, 22 years old, and Anna's husband Edward M. Mcnamara, 28 years old.  They also had Bertha's nephew, another George Riebow, 18 years old, living with them (dates match up with brother, Frank's son, George William John Riebow who was born January 16, 1892). Henry was working as a laborer in the "work train" industry, son-in-law Edward as a cook at a restaruant and nephew George as a lumber piler at a "flooring mill".  Bertha and Henry filed for divorce on October 16, 1912, but the petition was contested and was "dismissed". In the 1920 US Census, taken on January 02, 1920, Bertha, still living in Big Rapids, Michigan, had 10 year old daughter, Helen at home.  Bertha was 57 years old and is listed as divorced.  This record states the year immigrated as 1879.  Bertha would have been 17 years old.  The 1930 US Census, taken on April 19, 1930, shows Bertha widowed, living by herself, in Big Rapids, Mecosta County, Michigan. She was 68 years old. This census states she immigrated in 1870. She would have been 8 years old. During the 1940 US Census, taken on April 11, 1950, Bertha was living in the same house, now 78 years old, and her daughter, Marie Dempsey was living with her.  Marie was 49 years old and also widowed.  Marie had been living with Bertha since at least 1935.  Bertha's children were:

Anna L. Carlson (1888 - ??), 22 years old, married Edward M. McNamara (1882 - ??), 26 years old, on January 01,. 1910 in Big Rapids, Mecosta County, Michigan. Edward's father was listed as Thos. Mcnamara, his mother as Elizabeth Dibble.  Anne's mother's name was transcribed incorrectly as "Ricboro" and "Ricebow".

Marie Elnora Carlson (December 12, 1890 [1891 on 1940 Census] - December 01, 1972, born in Big Rapids, Mecosta County, Michigan).  Marie married Roy Edward Dempsey (August 01, 1890 - June 13, 1944) from Stanwood, Michigan, a farmer, on August 8, 1916.  Marie was 25 years old, Roy was 26 years old.  Marie was from Big Rapids, Michigan, where Roy was born.  It was the first marriage for both.  They were married in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Roy's parents names were Delos F. Dempsey and Lily Finkbiner.  They had 3 children; Leroy Dempsey, John Dempsey (1917 - 1942), Rose Ann Dempsey (1921 - 2004).  Roy is buried at Stanwood Cemetery, Stanwood, Mecosta County, Michigan.

Carl J. Carlson (May 29, 1893 - July 26, 1956).  Carl married Hazel E Yoders on March 21, 1916 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. Carl was 22 years old, Hazel was 21 years old (February 9, 1895 - May 12, 1979).  Carl's mothers name is indexed as "Bertha Reibow".  Hazel's father was named Elgia and her mother Ella Lyon. Hazel was born in Pennsylvania. On June 5, 1917, 24 year old Carl registered for the WWI draft, claiming an exemption due to having a dependent wife and child.  He is described a tall and slender, with grey eyes and red hair.  He lived in Detriot, Michigan and was the Assistant Manager of the Service Department at Packard Motor Car Company in Detroit, Michigan. The 1920 US Census show Carl, 26 years old, and his wife, Hazel, living in Detroit Ward 17, Michigan with their two children, Catherine Carlson, 3 years old, and newborn Robert J. Carlson.  Both children were born in Michigan. Carl was working as an auto factory manager. The 1930 US Census has the Carlsons living in Detroit, Michigan with their 4 children; Catherine M. 13 years old, Robert 10 years old, Louise E. 7 years old and Harold Walter 8 years old.  Carl was 36 years old, and wife Hazel 35 years old.  This census incorrectly lists Carls place of birth as Pennsylvania. Carl was working as a salesmanager in automotive sales.By 1940, according to the 1940 US Census, Carl, 45 years old, and wife Hazel, 44 years old, were living in Grosse Pointe Farms, Grosse Pointe Township, Wayne, Michigan.  They had 3 children living at home; Robert, 20 years old, Louise, 19 years old and Harold, 17 years old. Carl was working as a salesman at an automobile agency, Roberr was an Assistant Paymaster in the automotive industry and Harold was a clerk at a grocery store. Click here to see a picture of Hazel and grandson, Carl J Carlson, named after her husband, taken in 1959.  Photo from Ancestry.com.  Harold went on to marry Patricia Ellen McDonell, they had 3 children.

Thelina "Thelma" Elizabeth Ensch (July 30, 1900, another record says July 31, 1900 - June 8, 1952), born in Big Rapids, Mecosta County, Michigan.  Married to last name Simmington. Died in Grand Rapids, Michigan at the age of 51 years old.  Her death index has her mother listed as "Bertha Reivow".

Another excerpt from a relative's posting on Ancestry.com,

"From Riebow Family Bible" Posted by shans751

"Grandfather George purchased the farm near Stanwood, Mecosta County, Michigan on 29, April 1885. Grandmother Ernestine had a life estate on the property at George's death in 1908."

On George's Death Certificate his father is listed as Geo F. Reibow, born in Germany, and his mother's maiden name is difficult to read.  It is possibly Louise Winters, which is the name recorded on other family trees.  She was also born in Germany.

George was buried in Stanwood Cemetery, Stanwood, Mecosta County, Michigan on September 02, 1908.

The informant of George's death was son, Frank Riebow of Stanwood, Michigan.

S. Hanson, great-great granddaughter of Simon Georg Riebow, shared the following: Robert Rebo, son of Keith Rebo, while in the military and stationed in Germany, found the following church records for George Riebow and wife, Ernestine Herz, and their families. Robert noted in his footnotes that the records are from Neuenfeldt Church, with a duplicate record book at the Pfarramt in Schoenberg for various years in the 1800s. This research was conducted in 1996. Record 1, record 2, record 3, record 4, record 5, record 6, record 7, record 8. For genealogy purposes, they were translated from German to English.
